Rehabilitation Awareness Week

Normally, I don’t pay much attention to the random “holiday” designations formed by various special interest groups — like National Blueberry Popsicle Month or Fortune Cookie Day, both in September, by the way.

But I am acknowledging this week’s National Rehabilitation Awareness Week (Sept. 18-24), which draws attention to the benefits of physical rehabilitation, among other things, and acknowledges those who are giving and receiving these services. Rehabilitation Awareness Week, organized by the nonprofit National Rehabilitation Awareness Foundation in Scranton, Pa., has been observed nationally on the third week of September since 1997.

Most Americans will require at least one rehabilitation service at some point in their lives — be it for a joint replacement, stroke, an injury from a car accident, or a debilitating disease.

As a recipient of physical therapy, after arthroscopic hip surgery this summer, I am  grateful to have these resources available to help me get back on my feet and tackle the everyday life activities once taken for granted, like walking up and down the stairs or getting in and out of a car.

So, thanks. Now maybe I’ll go get a Popsicle.

Thanks for reading, David! You guys work miracles.

  2. As a physical therapist, thanks very much for taking the time to make this blog and to interweave your story with great clinical information. It is always nice to hear about someone who is having a successful post-surgical rehabilitation outcome!

Welcome

Most athletes have experienced a “second wind,” that jolt of energy and strength that allows us, enervated and dispirited, to carry on. But sometimes our bodies cannot recover on their own – we need outside help so we can catch our “third wind.”
